Schools Class 4-4-0 30935 at Tonbridge, believed to be on the 10th June 1961, the last weekend of main line steam in Kent. If this was the 10th June then it is quite likely that the train was the 10.40 Wolverhampton to Ramsgate, due at Tonbridge at 15.39.

This photo of Schools Class 4-4-0 30934 at Tonbridge was certainly on 10th June 1961! In this photo it was coupled to O1 0-6-0 31065. Brother Don, who has kept a wonderful archive of data from those days almost 50 years ago, tells me the two locos arrived on the 16.58 Dover Priory to Tonbridge. With the O1 most likely having joined the Schools Class at Ashford.

Schools Class 4-4-0 30901 drifting down into Redhill with the 14 coach, 07.40 Birkenhead to Margate train at circa 15.03 on 25th April 1962. Those lovely three cylinder locos were said to be the most powerful 4-4-0s in Europe. And needed to be, to take 14 cars over the steeply graded Redhill- Guildford line.

Schools Class 4-4-0 30925 on the 17.00 Waterloo to Salisbury train between Pirbight Junction and Milepost 31 on 25th August 1962. The loco was possibly deputising for a Bulleid, and was going well, climbing to the MP 31 summit at a speed estimated to be in the upper 50s. Photo taken from a favourite overbridge that today serves the Pirbight army camp.
